As digital literacy becomes essential, Computational Thinking is emerging as a core skill in early education. Yet, many systems face barriers to integrating CT, especially in early childhood, where resources and teacher training are often limited.
In a 10-week study led by Dr Diane Vassallo in a Maltese primary school, 119 Year 1 students engaged in plugged and unplugged CT activities, guided by Design-Based Research and the Interest-Driven Creator theory. The intervention led to clear gains in CT skills, engagement, and problem-solving, while also supporting teacher growth.
This research offers practical strategies for embedding CT in early learning, highlighting the importance of flexible, interest-driven design and sustained teacher support to prepare children for a digital future.
A big congratulations to Dr Diane Vassallo for leading this impactful research study! Let’s continue building on this momentum, ensuring all young learners have the opportunity to develop the critical thinking skills they need to thrive in a digital world.
